Overview
The
Legacy Trail
is a 12.4 mile paved rail trail in Sarasota, Florida. The Legacy Trail is built on railroad lines originally owned by the Seaboard Air Line Railway and later CSX Railroad. The trail is 12 feet wide and has15 rest areas (8 with restrooms) and 7 trailheads.There is limited access to water on the trail so pack accordingly. The
Legacy Trail is part of a large project in Sarasota County Florida to add many trails.
One highlight of the trail is the Venice Train Depot. A reconstructed transit facility located at the Venice trailhead and the Abraham Trail Center at Urfer Park.
The
Legacy Trail saw frequent use by the military during WWII and later it was used regularly by the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus. Ringling Bros. had a winter headquarters in Venice, Florida from 1962 to 1992.
