Pinellas Trail
Pinellas Trail
Overview
The
Pinellas Trail
is a 37 mile rail trail in Pinellas County Florida created on former tracks of CSX Railroad. The trail runs from Tarpon Springs, Florida to St. Petersburg, Florida. The first five miles of the park was completed in 1990.
The trail while in and around large population centers travels through many parks, water areas, costal communities and natural settings. Other highlights of the trail include the multiple artwork stops along the trail and the Cross Bayou Bridge over Boca Ciega Bay and the trail spur to Honeymoon Island.
This trail, created in part from tragedy when a man's son was hit by a car, is a testament to trail safety. The trail goes through a very urbanized area, but has multiple pedestrian bridges, overpasses and underpasses to keep riders out of traffic. In addition, the city leadership is bike-friendly with ongoing efforts to accomodate bikes and pedestrians.
The trail is very secure. Regular patrolling is carried out by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, the Pinellas County Park Rangers and the Auxillary Rangers.
