Comet Trail Overview
The
Silver Comet Trail is a 60 paved mile rail trail that goes
from Smyrna, Georgia to Anniston, Alabama where it connects
to the Chief Ladiga Trail, another rail trail 33 miles in
length. This trail is a favorite because it offers a long
distance easily ridden surface through exceptional scenery
of pine forests, rock walls and wildlife.
The Silver
Comet was a passenger train operated by the Seaboard Air-Line
Railway until 1969.
Trail
highlights include the 750 foot long Pumpkinvine Creek Trestle,
the 800 foot Brushy Mountain Tunnel and the lake overlook
at mile marker 45. There are several places along the route
for food and provisions, but care should be taken to include
plenty of water and snacks depending on your mileage.
As of
April 2007 there is still minor construction on a few final
points. Be sure to check the trail links for detours around
construction.
