Hiawatha Trail / Bearskin State Trail

Hiawatha Trail / Bearskin State Trail Overview

The Hiawatha Trail and Bearskin Trail are two trails in Wisconsin's Northern Highlands which are often completed together.

The Bearskin State Trail

The Bearskin State Trail located in Wisconsin is an 18.3 mile trail runs from Minocqua, Wisconsin to Harshaw, Wisconsin. The Bearskin State Trail runs on a railroad bed formerly used to haul lumber. The trail passes through the communities of Minocque, Hazelhurst, Goodbow and Harshaw. The southern trail ends near Harshaw near the intersection of County Highway K and Highway 51 in Oneida County.

The trail runs through fairly dense woodland areas with many opportunities to see wildlife and enjoy nature. Bearskin Trail traverse 13 railroad trestles along the route including the 375 foot long trestle over Lake Minocqua. The area has many lakes the result of glaciers advancing and retreating thousands of years ago. Wildlife along the trail include bald eagles, deer, loon, and black bears.

This part of the trail has sections that are fairly remote and isolated. There are restrooms at the trail heads and only restroom on the trail. There is no easy access to food and water so plan accordingly. There is lodging and food at both northern and southern trail heads.

The Hiawatha Trail

The Hiawatha Trail is a 6 mile trail that follows the same railroad corridor as the Bearskin Trail. The Hiawatha Trail runs south from Heafford Junction, Wisconsin to Tomahawk, Wisconsin. The trails are connected by a 5 mile on road connection.

Trail passes are required for bicyclists 16 years of age. Self registration boxes for passes are also available at both trail heads. Trail passes are available at local DNR offices, the Minocqua Chamber of Commerce, and the Northwoods Store near the south end of the trail. More information on Trail Passes in Wisconsin.
