Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis Trail
Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis Trail Overview
Baltimore and Annapolis Trail (WB & A Trail) is a 5.6 mile rail trail on the corridor of an old electric
commuter railroad from the 1930's. The trail runs from Bowie, Maryland to Glenn Dale, Maryland. The trail ends at Rt 450 Annapolis Road at the end of Electic Avenue. The WB&A Trail opened
in November 2000.
The trail is a great mix of suburban areas mixed with scenic nature views on rolling hills. There is abundant wildlife and only a few low traffic crossings. This trail has five bridge crossings and two tunnels under a roadway. There is parking at both trailheads in Bowie and Glenn Dale (behind Old Glenn Dale Hospital). There is a nice pond at the Glenn Dale trailhead as well.
There are big plans in place for this trail. The hope is to extended the trail across
the Patuxent River into Anne Arundel County to connect to a series of trails that will eventually lead all the way to Annapolis, Maryland. The trails of the WB & A Trail on the Anne Arundel County side currently are 3.8 miles long. The trail from Odenton to Annapolis will be called the South Shore Trail. All together these trails will be 22 miles mile long.
This great trail ends at the Patuxent River where there is an old railroad bridgehead on both sides of the river. This single river crossing represents the key to creating one of the most incredible trail experiences in Maryland. Unfortunately, this crossing and the 1.5 miles of railroad corridor beyond are in dispute. This dispute has lasted over 10 years. So what has prevented a simple resolution to this issue for over ten years?
